Treating Others Badly Will Hurt Only One Person You

Rewarding Others Badly Will Hurt Only One Person… You Rewarding Others Badly Will Hurt Only One Person… You Rewarding others can cause issues down the road for you. Late in February, a firestorm emitted on the web. You may have just caught wind of this the same number of news sources and individuals via web-based networking media overall began talking about it as a dazzling case of unspeakable egotism. The circumstance: The top of the Cleveland work bank, Kelly Blazek, reacted to a vocation searcher's entirely sensible email solicitation to interface with her gathering… with a blistering and battering answer. By and by, my heart throbs for the youthful careerist (and any other individual who connected with Ms. Blazek who was treated with a similar response). Do you recall what it resembled attempting to secure your first position? I do. It was horrendous. Not knowing anybody and not understanding the scene of how to advertise oneself is incredibly hard. Particularly in this economy, which despite everything is viewed as drowsy, best case scenario by many. Youngsters today have a great deal of things neutralizing them as they battle to advocate for themselves and their vocations. Luckily, there are an entire ton of assets out there that can help which weren't accessible when I was a youthful little guy (Yes, I'm OLD). Notwithstanding that reality, this youthful activity searcher made the best choice (and showed a lot of activity) by connecting for help from what gave off an impression of being a trusted and educated asset. The main issue was that she was met by what essentially sums to a flamethrower pointed toward her. I have no clue about what was happening in Ms. Blazek's life to make her have such an insidious reaction to the activity seeker. I'll allow her that. However, I do need to state that Ms. Blazek baffled an a lot greater gathering of individuals than she even most likely thinks about. The whole human asset and professions enterprises were similarly sickened. In the event that we need to develop the group of people yet to come to fill our shoes, it requires thinking back and holding out our hand to lift them up. Not slapping it away like Kelly Blazek. What she did was so inconceivably ethically wrong on numerous levels, including making the whole human asset and vocations enterprises look terrible. This entire episode made me wiped out to my stomach. What she did was disregard a hallowed and certain trust that profession individuals are there to HELP. I genuinely trust this was a learning second for Ms. Blazek, yet more critically, it is one for every one of us. How we treat others can cause issues down the road for us. So do a strong. Whenever somebody connects with you for help, help them. We can help improve this world a spot when we set aside the effort to lift up the individuals around us. As opposed to destroying them.

3 Things That Will Heighten Employee Retention This Holiday Season

3 Things That Will Heighten Employee Retention This Holiday Season pexels Buying gifts, worrying about money to buy those gifts, spending time with family, not having time to spend with that family even without added work pressure, your employees are already extra stressed during the holidays. Virgin Pulse’s December 2014 survey of 1,000 participants, ‘Tis The Season For Stress, found 70 percent of employees have significantly raised stress levels during the holidays. Of those respondents, more than 10 percent said they feel an overwhelming 60 to 100 percent more stressed during this time of the year. 70% of #employees have raised stress levels during the holiday season (@virginpulse) #WorkplaceWellbeing Click To Tweet It turns out, the packed on stress during the holiday season isn’t just hurting your employees. In fact, Tis The Season For Stress reported 64 percent of employees say holiday-related stress causes them to be distracted at work, which in turn drives 30 percent more anxiety diminishing their quality of work by the same amount. With so many employees feeling the effects of holiday stress, that’s a number employers can’t afford. It’s time to leave the bottle of wine on the shelf and back away from the cinnamon scented candles. Your employees deserve long-term changes in the workplace that will help them de-stress and grow all year long. Here are three things your employees really want this holiday season: 1. Tools for success Technology especially outdated and slow-moving can really layer on the holiday stress. When employees are trying to do their jobs well and get home to their families, inefficient technological resources can really throw a wrench into their plans. Putting money into resources for your employees gives them the ability to perform at their highest level. However, the  2016 Workplace Index, a June study by Staples, found 89 percent of employees said they aren’t provided with the latest technology. Needing updated technology is a year-long issue, but during the pressure-filled holidays, it may end up decreasing employee retention. Nobody understands what their jobs entail better than your employees so why not let them tell you what they need to perform at their best? Each month, sit down with your team to discuss what’s working well and what needs updated. These meetings can be used as brainstorming sessions for co-workers to discuss how these improvements will be used to make them stronger or even help each other understand new technology as it comes in. 2. Benefits to stay healthy Added stress increases both physical and mental health concerns. Employees who are out sick or are unable to focus due to high anxiety levels are unable to perform their regular duties, let alone go above and beyond to hit goals and expectations. It is important to place a heightened focus on well-being during the holiday season, but companies should be offering wellness benefits year-round. The benefits for employers and employees alike are obvious in Limeade’s 2016 Well-Being And Engagement Report. Of the 1,276 employees surveyed, 91 percent with high well-being are less likely to leave a job than those with lower well-being. Unfortunately, most companies are still missing the mark. A disappointing 24 percent of participants in Harvard Gazette’s February Workplace and Health poll said their company offers wellness/health programs. While some employees need well-being support all year, most would highly benefit from it during the holiday season. Take time to listen to how employees are feeling. Keep an open door policy to let your team know their leaders are available to listen about any issues during any time of the day. Send out wellness surveys to see how they’re holding up and what they need from you to help them lower stress levels. Set up mandatory fifteen minute breaks throughout the day, create a technology-free break room, or even bring in a wellness coach to teach mindful breathing techniques. 3. Recognition of hard work Most employers are aware of the hard work their employees put into the organization, but when was the last time you told them about it? Employees have a lot to do outside of work, especially during the holiday season, so when they continue going above and beyond their job descriptions, they should know it’s being acknowledged. We’re all willing to work harder for leaders who give frequent positive feedback. That’s why implementing a recognition program is crucial for motivating employees to do their best. The holidays are a great time to start a fun season-themed program. Implementing a #PositiveFeedback system can help motivate #employees through the holiday season. Click To Tweet Since time off and money are hard to come by this time of year, offer half days or bonuses to those who are excelling in their positions. If your company can’t afford bonuses and days off, try an online peer-to-peer recognition platform where co-workers can post virtual motivation and positive feedback to those who have helped them or are rising above the call of duty. December is a challenging month for employees. When leaders are able to empathize with that, they’ll be able to equip their team to put out their best work. After all the glitter, gifts, and winter wonderland charm has disappeared, employees will continue needing the benefits of an understanding and communicative workplace. Having healthy employees who have positive leaders and the tools to do their jobs well is the gift that will keep on giving. What gifts do you give your employees during the holiday season? Let us know in the comments below!

Teaching Ethics in B-School is Irrational Behavior

Showing Ethics in B-School is Irrational Behavior Showing Ethics in B-School is Irrational Behavior Dan Ariely, creator of Predictably Irrational and Duke Fuqua educator, on the most nonsensical practices he finds in business schools:I feel that business colleges dont comprehend irreconcilable circumstances. For instance, they feel that on the off chance that they offer classes on profound quality and morals, individuals will quit being improper or untrustworthy. That wont essentially happen. Also, something I abhor the most in business instruction is contextual analyses, since contextual investigations give individuals the dream that theyve really took in an idea. Understudies just find out around one story for a situation study. They can't become familiar with the entire situation. And on one of the most significant apparatuses business understudies can learn:I think we have to show understudies more measurements. They have to realize how to utilize existing information and how to produce new information on the off chance that the current information doesn't give an answer. The wor ld works in likelihood. How to deal with job search blues - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach

How to deal with job search blues - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach I have been hearing lately from some clients that the job search is taking them much longer than anticipated companies are slow in making decisions, and in some cases, they have opted to advance an internal employee after interviewing several candidates. I’ve seen that situation happen many times in my recruitment career and it’s always very frustrating for a candidate who’s put in a lot of time and effort into interviewing with that particular company. If you’ve been in that situation, it could be hard not to get depressed or at least feel very low. When depression creeps into a lengthy job search, the effects are crippling…it’s hard enough dealing with a loss of income and loss of job title. I am not a certified counselor, but my advice in this area comes from personal experience and it comes from the heart. I remember speaking to one candidate who’s just lost his very high paying job and his wife has also just been made redundant. I can imagine how stressful this situation must have been for the whole family. Whether you are knee-deep in a job search, involuntarily unemployed or about to start a search on your own, here are a few things to keep in mind. 1) Get your mind prepped for the long haul: What often surprises most job seekers is how long the job search may actually take â€" yes, the opportunities exist, but in a competitive market where companies want to minimize their job search costs, it can easily take a few months. There might be a lot of open positions, but there are also a lot of candidates looking. 2) Don’t blame yourself but really think hard if you are doing everything you can. It’s hard to avoid doubting yourself and questioning your abilities when the job search seems to drag on and on. Before you start beating yourself up about your age, your degree, your experience or your places of employment, consider your online and offline brand presentation. Is your resume targeted to each position you are applying for? Is your LinkedIn profile complete? Are you actively networking with people who could help you find that next job? 3) Lose the online/computer addiction: Technology is great and can definitely help you in your job search, but don’t become addicted to emails and online job portals as your only source for job opportunities. If your daily goals, include resume blasting and applying for 10 jobs each day, you could be looking for a job for a very long time. And trust me when I say that you’d be better off applying for less jobs but tailoring your application to those you do apply for. 4) Push past feeling uncomfortable, do it anyway: A lot of people feel uncomfortable with networking and even reaching out to people to explore untapped job opportunities. I can relate, but challenge yourself to do it anyway…make a phone call, invite someone for coffee, hold your own networking meeting with employed colleagues, create your personal advisory team, just do it anyway. 5) Take a closer look at that bridge job: It could be a lateral move, a short-term consulting project, a part-time job or a new industry to offer your expertise. 6) Connect and stay connected to others: Your personal job situation may only affect you and your immediate family, but you are NOT the only one going through it. Find support groups through professional networks and other associations…the more you disconnect from others, the more you will become isolated and depressed. 7) Get help. If you’ve had several unsuccessful interviews, it is highly likely that your interview technique is to blame. Get some help and get it quick, unless you plan to spend the next 6 months with no income. Don’t wait until you’ve had 20 unsuccessful interviews and your confidence is completely lost before you get some support. If you’d like some help, please email me on Margaret@interview-coach.co.uk and let’s talk! The longer you wait, the more difficult it is going to get, so why wait? To those of you still searching, still hoping and still trying, keep pushing and pushing until you reach success. I wish you luck!

Rather, I used to go through hours cleaning my resume and rehearsing for the meeting. I never truly realized how to compose a subsequent email; so I simply didn't do it. What I didn't understand was, I was letting openings pass me by not shutting the deal. After long periods of battling with what content I ought to incorporate and to what extent I should hold up before sending the email, I have it made sense of. Underneath, I'll share what I've realized alongside guides to represent the points. Why are follow-up messages important?A follow-up email is your method of indicating that you care about what you and the individual being referred to had recently spoken about and demonstrates you weren't simply making casual banter. A genuine model is when individuals get in touch with us since they'd prefer to compose for our blog. 90% of them don't send a subsequent email they never do it. This makes me question whether they truly need to work with us, or theyre simply attempting their karma. The ones that continue annoying us with follow-up messages get our attention.A follow-up email is the contrast between somebody tossing resumes at the divider to perceive what sticks and the individual who is really keen on working with you. When do I send a subsequent email? The measure of time that should go before sending the email relies upon why you're sending it. For instance, after a meeting, a vocation reasonable or a systems administration occasion, it's acceptable to send it inside 24 hours. Thusly, you'll have the option to remind the individual about what your identity is or what you discussed. When sending your resume to the CEO of your fantasy organization, you could give it in any event 48 hours. As they are one of the busiest in the organization, it may take them longer to peruse your underlying message. What to write in a follow-up email?Again, it relies upon the setting of your circumstance. Try not to let them disregard you. Emphasize your enthusiasm for the activity position and the organization. To remind the enrollment specialist why you are the ONE for the activity, feature your abilities and experience that are pertinent to the activity you applied for. Utilize similar watchwords they did in the activity spec. After a meeting, there's continually something you neglected to specify. The subsequent email is your method of adding something significant you needed t o make reference to however overlooked on the grounds that you don't manage stress.Example:Hi [Name],Thank you for removing the time from your bustling timetable to converse with me about the [Position] with [Company].After talking with you, I accept that I would be an ideal possibility for this position. I'd offer the [Your top skill] and [Another top skill] that you requirement for such a broadened position. In expansion to my eagerness for performing great, I would bring the [Your involvement with the required field] important to land the position done.I anticipate got notification from you once an official choices are caused in regards to this position. Please to feel allowed to get in touch with me whenever if additional data is needed.Thank you again for your time and consideration.Sincerely,[Your Name]Hand-picked related substance 2. Systems administration eventsIf you simply went to a systems administration occasion, it was on the grounds that you needed to meet new individual s and get new contacts, correct? Make sure to gather messages or business cards of any individual who you'd prefer to keep in contact with. Why? So you can send them a short message subsequently, to assist them with recollecting that you. This can likewise assist them with recalling who you are in when you have a venture to chip away at with them. You should simply compose your future email as an answer to the bygone one. They will see you had a discussion before.Your message to such individuals ought to be short and directly to the point. Additionally, attempt to attach it to what both of you discussed. Ideally something more significant than the weather.Like that, you will show your thankfulness, ability to keep in contact and build up a further relationship.Example:Hey [Name],It's [Your name] and we met on the present [Name of the event]. It's an opportunity to leave a decent early introduction along with your as of late upgraded continue. ?? The job of a subsequent email is very significant here. It could be your method of getting a meeting, particularly on the off chance that it was where everybody's attempting to make an enduring impression. In the email, clarify that you'd be so eager to work for them. Notice the primary reasons why you would be the ideal individual for the activity, underscore your qualities and capacities while exhibiting that you would be a decent organization fit. of your characteristics as a competitor and why you consider you'd be the privil ege qualified for them. I know your inbox is presumably a bustling spot, yet I simply needed to state Thank You for conversing with me today. As I referenced, I would be eager to get an opportunity for a meeting for the situation of [The position] you're presently advertising. I accept that both my delicate and hard aptitudes are emphatically in accordance with your requirements.I think my involvement with [Your uncommon ability/experience] would prove to be useful when building up another procedure for [the name of the organization/venture you discussed]we talked about. Inform me as to whether you'd like any extra information.I likewise joined my resume, in the event of some unforeseen issue. Much appreciated again and I would like to got notification from y ou soon.Best,[Your name]4. Follow-up email subsequent to sending your resume to a potential employerOne of the exhortation I provide for understudies and other occupation trackers on occasions is this. Rather than transferring your resume through the activity sheets and general sites, contact the CEO or a supervisor of an office you'd prefer to work in. The inquiry they pose to me after that is: But imagine a scenario in which they don't answer. What do we do at that point? The appropriate response is send them a follow-up email.Again, it's your method of helping them to remember how propelled you are the reason you'd be the correct decision for them. Prior to drafting the email, check the individual's online networking profiles. Have they as of late posted whatever you find fascinating? Consider referencing that in the email to grab their eye. It's acceptable to hold up in any event 48 hours before you catch up with them. (Utilize a comparative model as the one in the first point.) Back to you!Yes, searching for an occupation is a troublesome assignment. You have to examine the organization you'd prefer to work for and create a stunning activity explicit resume. At that point, in case you're sufficiently fortunate, they give you a possibility for a meeting. From that point forward, you even need to compose a subsequent email! Yet, when you do all that, the prize is better than Swiss chocolate. Try not to offer up and follow our guidance. 4 Tips for Achieving Your Professional New Years Resolutions

4 Tips for Achieving Your Professional New Years Resolutions Although many resolutions are focused on personal developmentâ€"like losing weight or quitting smokingâ€"many of them are catered toward professional development, such as getting a promotion or finding a better job. Since New Years resolutions are notorious for being abandoned by February, its important to approach your professional goals with a concrete plan within your reach. To discover some helpful tips on reaching your own New Years resolution, consider these. Resolution #1: Get a promotion Almost every working professional believes he or she should have a promotion, but a much smaller portion is actually working toward making this wish a reality. To get that coveted promotion, you have to put yourself in a position where you truly deserve it. This means working harder, investing more time and effort in your company by submitting ideas for improvement, and furthering your education to qualify for higher positions. The latter approach can be one of the best ways to show your boss you are a true go-getter. Although you may put your heart and soul into your work, you can still take advantage of educational opportunities by considering online alternatives to further your degree. Resolution #2: Quit your job Quitting your job puts you in a slightly less favorable position than the one presented above, but it doesnt necessarily have to be a negative or dramatic step. New years are about new beginnings: out with the old and in with the new. If youve been slaving away at an unfulfilling job with little sign of advancement or improvement, quitting may be a pragmatic decision. However, if you truly believe your decision is reasonable, then be reasonable in your approach. Submit a formal letter of resignation that respectfully discusses your decision with your boss and co-workers and gives the company adequate time to find a replacement and tie up loose ends. Leaving on good terms not only benefits the company, but also benefits you when searching for a new job. Further reading at So You Want to Leave a Job You Hate. Resolution #3: Find a job Following resolution number two, finding a job can be one of the most difficult resolutions to achieve when the economic odds are against you. However, remaining diligent and assertive throughout your search will generally pay off in the end. The first thing you should do is use every resource possible to help you find a job. This could include connecting with the career services department at your alma mater, industry associations, networking groups, and former professors and peers to discover new job leads. All of these resources can put you in the right place to land the job youve been searching for. Resolution #4: Improve your professional appeal Improving your professional appeal usually goes hand in hand with any other professional goal or resolution you may have this year. To improve your professional appeal, and to avoid getting into a monotonous routine at work, you can work on your professional development by taking advantage of a number of opportunities. Education should be a number one focus, since it usually has the biggest impact on an employers opinion of you. Consider going back to school either in a traditional setting or online to enhance your degree. You can also take training courses relevant to your profession to obtain specialist certifications and give yourself extra credibility. If youre not finding any luck in the job market, consider trying out internships to gain experience and develop connections with other professionals in your industry. Making resolutions is easy, but keeping them is tough. Commit to following each step that gets you closer to a new job, and you might be celebrating next year with a better job and a promising career. How to Budget Your Time for the Self-Care You Need

How to Budget Your Time for the Self-Care You Need Balancing a busy career with your own personal life is an ongoing challenge, and the pressure to perform at your best, take on big projects, and increase your productivity at work can leave you feeling drained once you’re home. The problem is, with the way that today’s world sees being constantly busy as a positive trait, there’s little time to invest in self-care. But when you’re constantly going at full speed without giving yourself time to recover, you’re setting yourself up for burnout. It’s impossible to do your best work and tackle big projects well when you’re stressed, exhausted, and mentally drained. If you want to invest in your professional career, fitting self-care into your busy schedule is one of the best ways to ensure you can keep performing at the top of your game. Recognize Stress To manage and implement self-care techniques, you need to start paying attention to what’s going on with your body, both mentally and physically. Recognizing when you’re feeling unusually stressed or are experiencing a high degree of anxiety can help you understand the factors in your life that may be making you feel that way. If you know you get anxious when you have looming deadlines at work, then it’s important to schedule some self-care even though you may be feeling overwhelmed. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA This can be one of the most difficult ideas to master when it comes to scheduling self-care. Naturally, when things are chaotic at work and you have a big project due, you’d want to buckle down and even work overtime so that you get ahead on that project and take some of the pressure off. But doing this again and again only adds to your anxiety, and when you’re anxious, it’s less easy to focus and you’re more likely to make mistakes. Instead, resolve that even when you’re at your busiest, you’ll make time for self-care. Maybe this isn’t the time to take off to a three-day retreat, but you can still budget some time for a daily walk, playtime with your kids, or a coffee with friends. Remember that taking this little break for yourself will allow you to return to work refreshed, and that will pay off in increased productivity. Schedule Vacation Do you have vacation days that went unused last year? You’re not alone. In 2017, Americans accumulated a staggering 705 million vacation days that went unused, and 52% of employees reported that they had unused vacation time at the end of 2017. By the end of 2017, Americans forfeited 212 million unused vacation days. It can be difficult to schedule a vacation, but it’s something that you should prioritize for your health’s sake. Going on vacation has many positive health benefits, including reducing your risk of a heart attack, boosting your immune system, and reducing the chances that you’ll suffer from anxiety, stress, or depression. If you needed another reason to justify taking a vacation, traveling can boost your creativity because it allows you to see new things and new locations. So yes, that vacation could help you to be more creative at work when you return. As part of your self-care routine, make sure that you take a vacation at least once each year. When you do head away, disconnect from your work life. Try to travel without relying on your phone and laptop, and get someone to cover for you at work so you truly don’t have to worry about any work commitments. Plan your vacation well in advance so that you can avoid any scheduling issues at work that might conflict with your travel plans. Then, enjoy your time away. Create Health Goals Budgeting time for self-care is tricky. It’s easy to make a commitment to taking more time for yourself now, but when life gets busy, that commitment tends to slip away. Setting concrete goals, especially when it comes to your health, can help you stick to those commitments that you decided to make. When you make goals for your mental and physical health, write them down and include lots of detail. If you want to improve your mental health by reducing your stress, decide how you’ll do it and how often. Write down a goal such as, “I will spend at least one hour four days a week doing a relaxing activity I enjoy, like yoga or going for a walk.” You can set similar goals for your physical health, such as deciding that you’ll exercise for an hour on four days a week, or that you’ll train for and run a 5K by the end of the fall. Knowing how important self-care is for your health, it’s time to make self-care a priority. Remind yourself that keeping yourself mentally and physically healthy is truly an investment in your career. Budget time out in your calendar and be firm about the time that you’ve set aside. That scheduled time is important for your health, and it’s what will allow you to continue to do quality work in the future. Longer Tweets Could Mean More Content for Personal Brands - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Longer Tweets Could Mean More Content for Personal Brands - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Twitter has been the main source of micro-blogging communication for brands, their customers and followers. People use the powerful network to leave feedback, send information, images, and updates. New changes to the character count could allow for more room to share content and opinions. Not everyone is embracing the idea of longer tweets on Twitter with many users accustomed to making quick updates. Here’s what you can expect from the company’s proposed change, which is still in the works: 1. Longer comments including usernames and links. After the recent change to longer DM’s (direct messages) in Twitter a similar approach would apply to the character count in links. This would allow for longer sentences that would include hyperlinks and usernames. Brands could benefit from this change as they share their content and respond to customers. 2. Retweet with comments. Back in April Twitter made this change official. Now users and brands can share other tweets and add their own comments while keeping the original information in tact. 3. Reach a wider audience. The proposed character limit extension on Twitter may help the company and brands reach more followers. The change is intended to make tweets more attractive and encourage retweets. 4. Build and encourage engagement. With more variety that would be offered in longer tweets brands can mix up their content more and make these stand out to their followers with the use of videos or images. A story can be more easily conveyed in an extended format. While everyone is watching and waiting for this anticipated change brands for now should be trying out the new retweet feature on Twitter and planning ahead for the expected changes. Longer tweets could provide a better way to convey a message; however, it is still too soon to tell whether users will embrace the new concept.

The Three Important Things to Keep in Mind When Writing Your Resume

The Three Important Things to Keep in Mind When Writing Your ResumeHayden International (HIG) is a nationwide company that offers resume writing services to large businesses and small businesses. Many HIG graduates have gone on to build their own resume writing business. Here are three things you should keep in mind when creating your resume:Have you ever seen a resume for a young person? The last thing you see is that person's picture on the cover page. Your resume is your cover letter. It can change the entire way you perform once you have that cover letter. Make sure that you address this in your resume. Are you aware of the employer's needs when considering your resume? Not all job postings require the same information. It is in your best interest to research your specific company and be certain that they are requiring the type of information that you are looking for. Most companies do not accept applications until the time frame for the hiring process has passed. This usually give s you an opportunity to craft a cover letter that will put your resume at the top of the pile. Make certain that you let the hiring manager know what the opening is about. You can also tell them about your experience, education, or career goals. Many graduates of Hayden International seek out web design jobs. They use their resume cover letters as proof of their skills, but you may want to think about putting together a resume from scratch. Do not forget that you can use your resume in conjunction with your previous resume cover letter. The cover letter is very similar to the resume that is in a resume. The cover letter should include important information and contact information that will bring the reader closer to completing the task at hand. The information must give the potential employer the benefit of furthering the task. This will increase the chance of hiring you.Do not copy another resume cover letter. This is one of the biggest mistakes made by new resume writers. It does no t matter if it was your first attempt at a resume cover letter. Copy an old resume cover letter and do not take the original to heart. Use your mistakes as inspiration for improving your current cover letter.Resume writing services are designed to help you present yourself in the best possible light. Your resume is the face of your career. It should include the necessary details for the job opening. Also, write to the potential employer in the best way that you can so that your resume can stand out from the rest.

Maybe youre a little afraid of it, if youre not at all social media savvy. You certainly dont need to spend a lot of time on Twitter to gain benefits, and, once you get the hang of it, its not difficult to use. I love Twitter. Exactly How to Use Keywords on a Resume (Examples Included)

Exactly How to Use Keywords on a Resume (Examples Included) Spread the loveResumes need keywords to appeal to ATS scans as well as human readers. Without the correct keywords, your resume will not get noticed; it may even get rejected by a computer before a hiring manager sees it.In this guide, we’ll outline what keywords are and exactly how to use them to your advantage while applying for a job. Later in the post, we’ll also cover the best hack for getting your resume noticed using keywords. What are keywords on a resume? Keywords are specific words or phrases on a resume that catch the attention of the hiring manager or help an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) understand who you are. Keywords on a resume are crucial for two reasons: first, to get your resume past an ATS scan, and second for when a human reviews it.   ATS scans delete over 75% of resumes so you need to optimize your resume with that in mind. Not to worry, well lay out exactly how to use keywords to pass that scan! How to include keywords on a resumeFor example, say a resume for a bookkeeper has the following phrases throughout the resume:AccountingBookkeepingManagementThe ATS may develop a summary like the following based on the usage of those keywords on a resume:As you see, the ATS generates a report like the one above that gives weight to an applicants skills, experience, and industry. More than 90% of employers use something similar to filter out unqualified candidates. You can see how your resume does in an ATS scan with our Free Resume Review. What keywords should you use on your resume? You want to ensure that you include the correct keywords for your industry on your resume. The first thing you should do is make a list of keywords that you usually see in a job posting related to your industry. You also want to ensure you add all your certifications and the major qualifications that are listed in the job postings. For example, a nursing position usually requires a RN certification and a bachelors degree. You would need to use the terms Bachelors, BA , RN and Registered Nurse. You should spell out the acronyms because the ATS may be looking for “BA” or “Bachelors” so it’s always a good idea to include both.Example of using keywords on a resume:An accountant may include the following keywords on a resume as they appear in many job descriptions:AccountingAccountantMicrosoft ExcelJournal entriesBalance sheetCPA (Certified Public Accountant)As you see above, these are common words that appear in most accounting job postings. Even qualified applicants may be rejected because they dont include the right keywords. You should go through a few job postings and see what words come up frequently and include those words on your resume.Types of keywords for resumesHere are the keyword groups you need to include on your resume.Technical skillsCertifications and licensesSoft skills: time management, communication, effective listeningAction keywords: achieved, implemented, increasedWe’ll get into these groups in more detail further d own in this post. How to include soft skill keywords on a resumeYou also want to add in some soft skills on your resume. They include things like communication, time management, problem solving, and teamwork. You can check out this post for more information on hard and soft skills to include on a resume.Even though an Applicant Tracking System focuses more on technical skills, it also weights these soft skills. Additionally, when your resume gets into the hands of a hiring manager, that person will be looking for your soft skills. There are certain soft skills that are important for each industry. For example, good communication, time management and confidence are very important for a salesperson. An accountant may have different soft skills that are important like problem solving, being analytical, and being organized.Example of including keywords on a resumeLet’s put this information into action with an example of how to include keywords on a resume. We’ll take Megan who is a nurse and show you how and where she applied these keywords. So here are some resume keyword examples:RNMedical NursingSurgical NursingPhysical Rehabilitation NursingCompassionateASNBSNSuccessAs you see, most of these keywords are hard skills, also known as technical skills. These keywords will probably be found in most nursing job descriptions. We included technical keywords related to the industry as well as some soft skills, like compassion. The final step is to include action verbs which are also important keywords that need to be included on your resume.Action keywords on a resumeAs with soft skills, action verbs aren’t weighted as heavily as hard technical skills but they do have some bearing on your overall ATS report.Action verbs on a resume are more important during a human review. When used correctly, they bring power and strength to your experience. A CareerBuilder survey of over 2,200 hi ring managers found what action verbs they liked to see on a resume.List of action words to include on a resume:AchievedImprovedTrained/MentoredManagedCreatedResolvedVolunteeredInfluencedIncreased/DecreasedIdeasNegotiatedLaunchedRevenue/ProfitsUnder budgetWonThese are just a few examples you could use. Here is a great list of more action keywords to include on your resume.Where to include keywords on a resumeYou should include keywords at every opportunity that makes sense on your resume. This is where you can switch out some words to include the ones you see in the listing. For example, if a graphic designer position says their desired qualifications are:Knowledge of Adobe IllustratorStrong image retouching abilitiesDynamic individual who has energy and enthusiasmConsidering you have the qualifications, you should add some of these keywords into your resume if they’re not already there. Some of the keywords you would want to add are:IllustratorImage retouchingDynamicEnergy or enthusiasmRemember, you don’t want to copy every keyword but you should definitely mention a good number of them on the resume.5 quick keyword tips:1. Include industry keywordsAlways include keywords that are common in your industry. This should include certifications, licenses, and programs you’re familiar with. This ensures that the system understands you are a match for the position you’re applying to.2. Avoid keyword stuffingAvoid using too many keywords in hopes of getting through an ATS. This is considered “keyword stuffing” and may set off a red flag to the ATS (or irritate the person in charge of interview scheduling).3. Use action verbsThe use of action verbs can please both the ATS and a hiring manager. Be sure to use action words as we outlined above.4. Find the right keywordsThe best place to find keyword ideas are in the job description itself. Look for both hard and soft skills that are desired in the job description and include those on your resume.5. Tailor your keywords for each positionAs we mentioned above, you want to customize each resume to the job listing. Find the keywords in the listing and use them naturally throu ghout your resume.SummaryKeyword optimization on your resume and cover letter is an underutilized way to get your resume noticed.
